Newt Gingrich: None of Debate Candidates a Challenge for Trump

By    |   Thursday, 27 June 2019 09:46 AM EDT

None of the Democrats in Wednesday night's debate will be a challenge for President Donald Trump, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Thursday, adding he thinks Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., "probably strategically" won.

"If I'm President Trump I don't pay attention at all to this stuff," Gingrich told Fox News' "Fox and Friends," after the president proclaimed on Twitter that the debate was "boring."

"None of these people are going to challenge Trump," said Gingrich. "The only person who challenges Trump is Trump. I think otherwise he just wins."

Meanwhile, Democrats this year are running "to the left," Gingrich said.  "You are going to be anti-Trump and to some extent, you are essentially arguing that America is a bad country and that only you can fix it."

Warren was "very effective" when she said she would "'fight for you the way I would fight for my own family,'" Gingrich added. "She doesn't need much more than that at this stage."

The senator came out with the "best line," he continued, and as a "very strong person."

Former Texas Rep. Beto O'Rourke, meanwhile, was the "big loser," as "everybody decided to beat him up because there is not much there anyway, and they just drove it further down," said Gingrich.

The candidates also took aim at the economy under President Donald Trump's administration, and Gingrich said that's because the Democratic Party is becoming increasingly "anti-American" as they "want to change everything."

"They have this problem," he said. "The Trump economy is actually working. And, yet, they think they have somehow got to attack it."
