Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich declared President Donald Trump as the big winner in Tuesday night's Democratic presidential debate.
"I thought it was a really good night for Donald Trump," Gingrich told Fox News' "Fox & Friends." "He could hardly have hoped for a better debate.
"You had a handful of rational moderates . . . their sound bites are perfect and they would replace probably half of the Trump ads for next year because they go out and tell the truth."
And then on the other side, there was Sen. Bernie Sanders, who was "a little bit like the angry uncle who showed up at Thanksgiving and nobody wanted to set him off because he'd start waving his arms and yelling," Gingrich said.
He also called Sanders' outburst that he wrote the "damn" Medicare for All bill "absurd."
"Lots of congressmen and senators write bills," Gingrich said. "Remember Obamacare, you get to keep your doctor and insurance? None of it was true. I don't care if we trust Bernie's interpretation of Bernie's own bill, but the big winner last night, I think without any question, was Donald Trump."
Gingrich added it will be interesting to watch the Democratic candidates evolve over the next couple of months, as the party's core is now "very, very left-wing and almost irrationally anti-Trump."
"They just want to stand around and chant and scream," Gingrich said. "You go down a series of these things, whether or not inside the Democratic Party there's a large enough base left of people who have common sense, I'm not sure."
