New Jersey's largest newspaper has called on Gov. Chris Christie to testify under oath about what he knew about his top allies' plot to cause a massive traffic jam at the George Washington Bridge for political payback.
"Gov. Christie needs to testify … and tell the people of his state what he really knew about this low-rent political stunt that torpedoed his career," the Newark Star-Ledger says in an editorial published Monday.
"His loyalists have testified that Christie has no respect for the law, for the truth, or for role of government. Until he shows up at a legislative hearing, we'll assume he agrees with them. It's time for the governor's close-up."
The newspaper's demand comes three days after powerful Christie allies Bill Baroni and Bridget Kelly were found guilty of helping orchestrate the crippling traffic tie-ups in 2014 as payback for Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich not supporting Christie's reelection.
Christie has maintained that he knew nothing about the plan, despite claims in court that the Garden State leader was aware.
"Gov. Chris Christie covered his tracks, and got away with it," says the newspaper, which asks the state legislature to grill him under oath.
