Future of NYPD Dominates GOP Mayoral Debate

The future of the NYPD has dominated a Republican mayoral debate.

The candidates gave their take Wednesday on what they'd do if their child was stopped by police. All of them support the stop-and-frisk tactic.

Nonprofit founder George McDonald says his son "wouldn't be stopped" since he lives in an affluent neighborhood. Billionaire businessman John Catsimatidis (kat-sih-mah-TEE'-dihz) believes the tactic soon will be replaced by improvements in technology. And a former transit official Joe Lhota (LOH'-tuh), says he'd read his daughter the court decision which justifies it.

Opponents of the tactic say it discriminates against blacks and Latinos. The GOP candidates are white.

The Republicans also clashed over Catsimatidis' plan to put police in high-crime public housing buildings.

Lhota has consistently led in the polls over Catsimatidis. McDonald is a distant third.
