New York City has rejected a $48,834 tax break President Donald Trump was about to land on his luxurious Trump Tower condo on Manhattan’s fashionable Fifth Avenue after the New York Daily News began asking questions about his eligibility.
The commander in chief had been set to enjoy the tax reduction thanks to an abatement program for condo and co-op owners within the five boroughs of New York City.
But, as the News reports, a homeowner is only eligible for that break if the apartment is his primary residence.
The city’s tax regulations define that as "the dwelling unit in which the owner of the dwelling unit actually resides and maintains a permanent and continuous physical presence."
But Trump hasn’t officially lived in his New York digs since he moved into the White House after his inauguration in January 2107.
The News says that after it asked asked New York’s Department of Finance about the abatement, it was pulled from Trump’s tax breaks.
The newspaper, in an editorial titled "Pay up, pal: Daily News catches Trump in a tax dodge," called Trump "the cheapskate in chief" for trying to get the tax break while primarily living in Washington.
Sheri Dillon, an attorney at Morgan Lewis who represents Trump in tax matters, did not respond to The News’s request for comment.
