Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich set the odds at "two out of three" that House Minority leader Nancy Pelosi becomes the next speaker of the House if the Democrats take back the chamber next month.
During an interview on Washington Post Live on Thursday, Gingrich was asked about Pelosi's chances for returning to her old post she previously held from 2007 to 2011.
"I think the odds are two out of three she'll be speaker and one out of three that [House Majority Leader] Kevin McCarthy will be," Gingrich said. "And I think that if she becomes speaker, she will have raised the money, she will have waged the campaign, she will have criss-crossed the country.
"Who's gonna get up and say she doesn't have any right to be speaker? My guess would be that if they win, she'll be speaker."
Several Democrats have said publicly they will not vote for Pelosi to serve as speaker should the party win back the majority in the House chamber Nov. 6. Gingrich said Pelosi is a tough opponent who cannot be taken lightly.
"I would say, first of all, Nancy Pelosi is a very smart, very tough person who has earned her position by just brute hard work, by applying her intelligence, and by building a network that has sustained her for a long time," he said.
"I would also say that anybody who thinks they're going to outmaneuver her is up against somebody who has spent literally her lifetime — starting with her father, who was the mayor of Baltimore — she's been in this business forever."
Democrats need a net gain of 24 seats to regain control of the House.
