Republicans are spending as much as $4 million to salvage Richard Mourdock’s candidacy in hopes of ensuring a GOP majority in the Senate.
The heavy spending follows Mourdock’s comments that God intended for pregnancies to occur from rape – and is coming from such groups as American Crossroads, the National Republican Senatorial Committee and the Club for Growth,
Politico reports.
GOP officials acknowledge that Mourdock’s standing has fallen in statewide polls – and Democrats are dropping as much as $3 million to boost Rep. Joe Donnelly, who they feel is going to pull one of the biggest upsets of this election season, Politico reports.
“Richard Mourdock shocked and embarrassed Hoosiers,” Dan Parker, the Indiana Democratic Party chairman, told Politico. “It’s no wonder he’s become toxic on the campaign trail.”
But Brose McVey, a senior Mourdock campaign official, remained confident, saying that other polls have the race “roughly tied.”
“Yes we’ve got an increase in unfavorable, but we’ve seen improvement in that in recent days,” McVey told Politico. “We’re very, very pleased with the numbers we’re getting lately.
“We sense a little bit of a nice trend line forming since about Sunday, McVey continued. “We know we’re going to have a favorable turnout.”
