Joe Biden is holding a 20-point lead over Sen. Bernie Sanders in Arizona before Tuesday's primaries, according to a new poll released on Monday.

The Monmouth University Poll, conducted March 11-14 shows the former vice president leading Sanders by 51% to 31%:

Also in the poll:

  • 5% of Democrats remained undecided.
  • 10% cast early ballots picking candidates who have since left the race.
  • 1% picked Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, D-Hawaii.
  • 50% of voters already casting ballots picked Biden, compared to 27% for Sanders.

Biden also holds large leads over Sanders in Florida, Illinois, and Ohio, the other states holding primaries Tuesday. Meanwhile, Maricopa County, the home for most of Arizona's voters, is closing many polling places because of the coronavirus epidemic, reports Politico.

Biden's largest leads comes from older and white voters, while Sanders leads among younger voters and Latinos:

  • 65 and older: Biden, 75%; Sanders, 8%.
  • White voters: Biden, 55%; Sanders, 26%.
  • 30 and younger: Sanders, 56%; Biden, 28%.
  • Latino voters: Sanders, 48%; Biden, 41%.

Meanwhile, most Democrats, by 63%, said it's more important to pick a nominee that will defeat President Donald Trump than it is to choose one addressing a policy issue they care most about.

Meanwhile, the poll also showed Arizona as a tossup in the general election:

  • Biden over President Donald Trump, 46% to 43%.
  • Trump over Sanders, 44% to 43%.

In the special election race for the Senate, retired astronaut Mark Kelly leads appointed GOP Sen. Martha McSally, by 50% to 44%. Kelly also had a higher favorability rate, of 35% favorable versus 39% unfavorable over McSally.

Democrats also, by 75% to 58% over Republicans, said they are concerned about coronavirus.

The poll surveyed 847 registered voters and carried a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points. In a subsample of 373 likely Democratic primary voters, the margin of error is plus or minus 5.1 points.
