Tunisia: Suspect in US Consulate Attack Held

Thursday, 01 November 2012 06:40 AM EDT

Tunisia's interior minister has confirmed that a jailed Tunisian man is "strongly suspected" of involvement in the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi.

In a television interview late Wednesday, Ali Larayedh said there were "major assumptions" that Ali Harzi, who was arrested and repatriated from Turkey, had a link to the attack, which killed the U.S. ambassador and three others.

Larayedh didn't elaborate. It was unusual that he spoke publicly about the sensitive investigation.

Harzi's lawyer told The Associated Press there is no solid evidence against his client.

Another Tunisian arrested in Turkey and repatriated has since been released, Larayedh said.

Turkish channel Kanal D has reported that two Tunisians attempting to enter Turkey on false passports were arrested and were suspected of links to the attack.
