Romney: NYTimes Wrong to Report He Didn't Want Rubio Over Finances

By    |   Thursday, 11 June 2015 10:05 PM EDT

The New York Times was wrong to report his campaign was concerned about tapping Sen. Marco Rubio as his presidential running mate because of his finances, 2012 GOP Mitt Romney told Fox News.

"The New York Times knows nothing about our vetting process," Romney said Thursday on Fox News Channel's "The Kelly File." "The story itself is not a new low for The New York Times, but another low for The New York Times."

Rubio was not a wealthy person who had a normal life and made investment decisions common to many Americans, Romney said.

"There was nothing wrong with what he did, nothing illegal with what he did, and to try to turn this into some kind of a hit piece was really totally inappropriate," Romney added.

The Times has been criticized from the right and the left over its recent stories on four traffic tickets Rubio received in a 17-year period and for buying an $80,000 fishing boat and a paying off $100,000 in law school student loans after getting an $800,000 book advance.
