House Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's call for bipartisanship is sparking accusations of hypocrisy, The Washington Post reported.
It stems from a McConnell column posted by Fox News on Tuesday. McConnell noted a series of measures both Republicans and Democrats had worked on together.
"And looking ahead to the coming year, there will be no shortage of opportunities to continue this impressive record of cooperation across the aisle and across the Capitol," he wrote.
"What we can make of those opportunities will depend on our Democratic colleagues. Will they choose to go it alone and simply make political points? Or will they choose to work together and actually make a difference?"
McConnell, R-Ky., even posted a link to the column on his Twitter account, writing:
"My latest Op-Ed: Will Dems work with us, or simply put partisan politics ahead of the country."
Amy McGrath, a Kentucky Democrat who was defeated in her bid for the House, tweeted: "Such an ironic Op-Ed title coming from you @senatemajldr – don't you think?"
Within hours after the column was posted, McConnell's Twitter account had received over 29,000 replies, the Post said. Many responded with one name: Merrick Garland.
It was McConnell who blocked Garland, President Barack Obama's appointment to the Supreme Court, the Post noted.
