Minneapolis police used tear gas on protesters who defied a Friday night curfew in the riot-torn city — as businesses boarded up and closed down in fear of continuing unrest over the brutal death of George Floyd.
As the 8 p.m. curfew fell over Minneapolis, St. Paul and several suburban communities, announcements were made to demonstrators at various sites that they were to go home, the Star Tribune reported.
At Minneapolis’ Third Precinct police headquarters, which was torched early Friday, State Patrol officers fired tear gas at protesters just before the curfew took place, the news outlet reported.
Earlier Friday, hundreds stopped traffic on the Hennepin Avenue bridge near downtown Minneapolis, then marched onto Interstate 35W and back into downtown, the news outlet reported.
But others appeared ready to keep going into the night.
According to the news outlet, there was hope the Friday announcement that Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin had been arrested and charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in Floyd’s death would quell protesters’ anger.
Many remained defiant, however, lifting their fists in the air.
“They can’t arrest us all,” the protesters yelled, the news outlet reported.
When the tear gas was launched, many fled the area, according to the Star Tribune.
