Appearing at a conservative forum hosted by former presidential candidate Mitt Romney, one of America's leading tech entrepreneurs likened Donald Trump to two of the worst dictators of the 20th Century: Benito Mussolini and Adolph Hitler.
Billionaire Republican donor Meg Whitman, the CEO of Hewlett Packard and former head of eBay, also grilled House Speaker Paul Ryan during Experts and Enthusiasts, an annual summit headed by Romney that brings together his top donors and major political figures.
At one point, according to Politico, Whitman challenged Ryan over his decision to support Trump. In framing her question, she compared Trump to past historical demagogues including Hitler and Mussolini.
Defending himself, Ryan pointed out that he’s criticized Trump in the past. But, he said, because he's the House Republican leader, he has to lead an entire conference that includes many Trump supporters. Others lawmakers, he said, may not like Trump but represent districts where he is quite popular, Ryan pointed out.
The effect of Trump on key races this fall in the House and Senate is a huge worry among Ryan and other Republican leaders.
Whitman, who waged an unsuccessful 2010 bid for California governor, is a key Republican donor with ties to Silicon Valley, which leans left and has not been sympathetic to many Republicans and especially Trump. During the primary, she threw her support to Our Principles, an anti-Trump super PAC.
