AdWeek: Hillary a 'Newsstand Flop' in 2014

By    |   Tuesday, 16 December 2014 07:40 PM EST

People magazine's worst-selling issue of 2014 was a cover story and exclusive interview with Hillary Clinton, proving politicians still can't compete with celebrities when it comes to moving products at newsstands and supermarket checkout lines, AdWeek reports.

The June 16 edition of People, featuring a beaming Clinton over the headline "Hillary & The White House," sold 503,890 copies — a "newsstand flop," AdWeek says.

The magazine's No. 1 issue in 2014, with almost 1.2 million copies sold, was the Aug. 25 issue devoted to beloved actor and comedian Robin Williams after his shocking suicide.

A Williams cover story, "Inside His Final Hours," was also the top newsstand draw of 2014 for "In Touch" magazine, with 571,780 copies sold.

AdWeek's 2014 roundup of newsstand sales covered the big four of celebrity glossies: People, Star, Us Weekly and In Touch.

Clinton's People cover coincided with the media-intensive promotional campaign for her memoir "Hard Choices," a book widely viewed as a warm-up to another presidential run.

Although it was a dud by People standards, Clinton's cover story did outrank two other magazines' top sellers in strictly numerical terms.

The top Star issue of 2014 was a Jan. 6 cover exclaiming the second pregnancy of Kate Middleton, duchess of Cambridge, with 347,422 copies sold.

Us Weekly's best-seller, at 501,802 copies, featured "Real Housewives of New Jersey" star Teresa Giudice in March after she and her husband pleaded guilty to criminal fraud. Giudice will be modeling prison fatigues beginning in January.
