More than 95% of Americans are "troubled by the current state of media," according to a poll released Wednesday by PR agency Bospar and market research firm Propellor Insights.
Fifty-three percent of that number cited "reports on fake news" as the reason for their concern, 49% said "reporting gossip," and 48% cited "lying spokespeople."
Additionally, 67% of the 1,010 American adults surveyed believe ethics in journalism will be worse during the 2020 presidential campaign.
President Donald Trump has repeatedly bashed the news media, specifically CNN, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and MSNBC.
Ahead of a 9/11 commemoration Wednesday, Trump complained about polling and media coverage.
He tweeted:
"If it weren't for the never ending Fake News about me, and with all that I have done (more than any other President in the first 2 1/2 years!), I would be leading the 'Partners" of the LameStream Media by 20 points. Sorry, but true!"
Forty-seven percent of those polled said local print and online journalists were the most ethical, compared to just 23% who said local TV reporters and anchors were the most ethical.
"If ever there was a time for an in-depth discussion about ethics in the media, it's now," James Ennis Kirkland, president of the San Francisco Press Club, said according to a release from Bospar.
