McCain: Grassroots More Enthusiastic About Romney

By    |   Monday, 05 November 2012 10:42 AM EST

Sen. John McCain said voters are more energetic toward the Republican nominee this time around, the National Journal reported.

The 2008 Republican presidential nominee from Arizona said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” show that he senses a lot more energy for the GOP ticket this time around.

“There's incredible enthusiasm out there,” McCain said. “How that translates, I'm not exactly sure. But it's bound to be encouraging for Mitt.”

A Gallup poll backs his claim, in terms of campaign satisfaction anyway. Voters in 2012 are more satisfied with Mitt Romney’s campaign than they were with Sen. John McCain’s in 2008, the new Gallup poll shows. While 40 percent were satisfied with McCain’s campaign in 2008, 54 percent of voters said they were satisfied with Romney’s 2012 bid.

Recalling the day before the election in 2008, McCain said, “It’s a lot of tension and, obviously, it's a lot of excitement,” he said.

“In my case, I think there was also a bit of a dose of reality in that we could read the polls and knew that it was going to be very difficult to win, but that didn't change our enthusiasm or our going all out until the last minute,” he said.
