McCain Blames Obama for Syrian Gas Attack

By    |   Wednesday, 21 August 2013 03:12 PM EDT

Sen. John McCain has put the blame on President Barack Obama for the alleged chemical weapons attack by Syrian government forces Wednesday.

He said in a Twitter message that lack of action following Obama's assertion that the Assad regime had used chemical weapons had emboldened the Damascus government.

"No consequence for Assad using chemical weapons & crossing red line — we shouldn't be surprised he's using them again," McCain wrote.

Democrats apparently feel the same way. The twitter account of the Democrats on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, re-posted McCain's tweet with "Yes" written in front of it.

In June the White House said Syrian government forces had crossed the red line set by President Barack Obama in using chemical weapons and therefore the United States would send arms to the rebels.

On Wednesday, Syrian activists accused the government's military of unleashing a huge chemical weapons attack that killed hundreds of people in the suburbs of Damascus.

McCain has consistently lobbied for a stronger U.S. military effort against the Syrian regime led by President Bashar al-Assad.
