McCain Relationship With Obama Like 'The Honeymooners'

"Tonight Show" host Jay Leno described the testy-turned-cozy relationship between Democratic President Barack Obama and his one-time rival for the Oval Office, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., as a "bromance."

Obama, appearing as Leno's guest on Tuesday, took the bait, saying, "That's how a classic romantic comedy goes, right? Initially you're not getting along, and then you keep bumping into each other."

But when CNN's John Berman asked McCain on Thursday which romantic comedy best described his relationship with Obama, he seemed caught off guard.

Searching for a moment, he laughed and offered, "Given my age, how about Ralph Kramden, what was it? 'The Honeymooners.' Or maybe 'I Love Lucy,' I don't know."

Both were hit shows from the early days of television. Jackie Gleason's Ralph Kramden was a cheapskate who constantly bickered with his wife, often threatening one day to send her "to the moon," most likely by physical force. But Alice Kramden always won out in the end leaving Ralph to declare, "Alice, you're the greatest!"

"I Love Lucy" starred real-life husband and wife Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. Lucy constantly got into troubling situations, which she tried to hide from Ricky, played by Arnaz. When the Cuban-born bandleader would catch Lucy in a scheme, he would demand, "Lucy! You've got a lot of 'splainin' to do!"

McCain didn't clarify which role he or Obama might play in either of the scenarios.
