Joe Biden has chosen Alejandro Mayorkas to lead the Department of Homeland Security.
Mayorkas would be the first Latino and first immigrant to head the department if he is eventually confirmed by the Senate, according to NBC News.
The network news reported that if Mayorkas does lead the agency, he is expected to drastically overhaul President Donald Trump’s hard line immigration policies.
The Jerusalem Post noted he was born in Cuba, but moved to the United States when he was one year old. His mother is a Romanian Jew, who had fled to Cuba to escape the holocaust.
“When I was very young, the United States provided my family and me a place of refuge,” Mayorkas said in a Monday tweet. “Now I have been nominated to be the DHS Secretary and oversee the protection of all Americans and those who flee persecution in search of a better life for themselves and their loved ones.”
During the Obama administration, Mayorkas served as both the DHS deputy secretary and the director of the Citizenship and Immigration Services, an immigration agency within the department, according to CNN.
Mayorkas turned 61-years-old on Tuesday.
