Democratic Rep. Max Rose expressed backing for the Trump administration peace deal with the Taliban 100 percent, telling MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” on Monday that is time to focus on a political solution.
“This decision by the administration is 100% correct,” said Rose, who received the bronze star and Purple Heart while serving as a soldier in Afghanistan. “We have got to focus on politics now in our longest-standing war.”
He added on "Morning Joe," as provided by Mediate, that “If we continue to only focus on combat, then this war will continue in perpetuity. We now see soldiers enlisting in the United States military who were not born when we first sent our soldiers to Afghanistan.”
Rose said that he does share concerns that withdrawing troops from Afghanistan could create a void similar to the rise of ISIS that followed the 2011 US reduction of troops in Iraq.
He noted that “one of the biggest problems with that withdrawal from Iraq is that for the most part they ignored politics, ignored the necessary power balance that would have to be sustained.”
In the case of Afghanistan, however, Rose insisted that “I do have confidence, albeit cautious optimism, that the Taliban is and can proceed as an entity that does want peace.”
The congressman agreed, however, that the United States “should always keep in precautions and keep in a capacity to respond should a terrorist organization move into Afghanistan.”
