British Tabloid: 'Coward Jihadi John' on the Run From ISIS, Special Forces

Saturday, 25 July 2015 03:03 PM EDT

Terrorist Mohammed Emwazi, better known by his nickname "Jihadi John, is reportedly on the run in Syria after fleeing the Islamic State terror network after he was revealed as the masked man with the British accent who beheaded American and British hostages.

An unnamed source tells the British tabloid The Mirror that ISIS killers would drop Emwazi "like a stone or worse if they feel he is no longer of any use to them, so it is possible he will end up suffering the same fate as his victims."

Special forces from the United States and Britain are looking for the 26-year-old Londoner, but according to The Mirror, he fears his former jihadist comrades may be his undoing, as his masking has diminished his value as an assassin.

The brutal killer is wanted for the beheading deaths of American journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff, British aid workers Alan Henning and David Haines, American aid worker Peter Kassig, and Japanese photojournalist Kenji Goto.

Haines' widow, Dragana, told the BBC earlier this year that she does not want "Jihadi John" to have an "honorable death," but instead she wants him captured alive and brought to justice, reports Time.

If Emwazi dies in battle, she said, other jihadists will consider him a martyr.

"I think he needs to be put to justice, but not in that way," Haines said.

But it may take some time before that happens. Another British publication, the Daily Mail, reports the Kuwaiti computer science graduate has not been seen in a propaganda video in six months after the beheading of the Japanese photojournalist.

Emwazi suddenly disappeared, and it's believed his unmasking lead to his decision to leave ISIS, the publication reported.

However, Nick Kaderbhai, a research fellow at the International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation and Political Violence in London is questioning the reported departure, telling The Daily Mail that The Mirror's report "isn’t the first of these stories to emerge; in the last few months he has said to have fled to Syria, Turkey and Libya.'

"It does not make sense to think that they would 'drop him like a stone,' Kaderbhai told The Daily Mail. "It's not like he’s a captured Westerner who has lost propaganda value.'If anything, the less he is featured, the more impact he will have."

Kaderbhai also dismissed claims that Emwazi is fearing for his life, as that "doesn’t fit the profile of the committed salafi-jihadist.They tend to embrace their identity wholeheartedly and claim not to fear death."

Instead, Kaderbhai believes that Emwazi has not appeared in videos lately because ISIS simply has "nothing high-profile to show off."

Earlier this year, there were rumors that ISIS had moved "Jihadi John" to Libya, to reportedly attend a terror training camp with gunman Seifeddine Rezgui, wanted for the slaughter of 30 British residents who were murdered while on a Tunisian beach on June 26, reports The Daily Mail.
