Emmanuel Macron said that if President Donald Trump pulls the U.S. out of the nuclear accord with Iran, "it could mean war," the French president told Der Spiegel.
"That would mean opening Pandora's box, it could mean war," Macron told Der Spiegel. "I don't believe that Donald Trump wants war."
Macron, fresh off his state visit to the White House, told Der Spiegel that it makes him "very sad" to hear Trump call the treaty a "catastrophe" just because it was negotiated by former President Barack Obama.
Macron also told the paper he "changed the choreography" with Trump with talks of a "new deal" that would be cloaked in changes to the current deal, one that he hopes Trump will agree to ahead of the May 12 deadline to stay in or pull out.
Iran is expecting the U.S. to not extend the deal next week and anticipates a "soft withdrawal" to allow the E.U. time to try and convince more concessions from the terrorist state. An adviser to Iran's foreign minister predicts Iran would pull out if the U.S. does.
"Ultimately, it's up to you how much you give in to the pressure from America and what this deal is worth to you," Foad Izadi told Der Spiegel.
