A man who was a staffer for former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo was hit and killed by a car after being forced out of a Lyft while on the highway in Delaware, state police told Fox 5.
Sidney Wolf, 43, died early Sunday morning after being hit by a car while on Route 1, also known as the Coastal Highway, after the driver of a Lyft that Wolf and five friends were riding in forced them to exit the vehicle.
A driver behind the Lyft moved between lanes in an attempt to avoid hitting the Lyft car and struck Wolf just after he stepped onto the thoroughfare. No other passengers were injured. The driver who struck Wolf stayed behind, but the Lyft driver reportedly fled the scene.
Police said that the driver "terminated the ride" after getting into an argument on an unknown topic.
"Shocked & saddened to hear this tragic news," Cuomo tweeted on Tuesday. "Sid was a phenomenal public servant who worked relentlessly for the betterment of all NY'ers."
He added, "My heart goes out to Lindsey & his two young daughters."
Wolf’s family told Fox 5 in a statement: "This is an extremely difficult time for our family. The level of shock and pain we feel right now cannot be measured as we continue to grieve.
"We truly appreciate the outpouring of love and support we've received and kindly request that the family's privacy is respected as we move through this process."
A spokesperson for Lyft said in a statement: "We are heartbroken by this incident. Our hearts are with the victim's loved ones during this incredibly difficult time, and we've reached out to the ride requester to offer our support. We are in contact with law enforcement and will assist them however we can."
