The Supreme Court’s order putting a hold on the enforcement of a Louisiana abortion law could end up having major implications nationwide, Vox is reporting.
Justices have blocked the Louisiana law requiring doctors to have admitting privileges at a hospital within 30 miles of the facilities where an abortion is to take place.
The high court’s order applies while the justices consider whether to hear the case. If the court decides to do so, it could open the door to revisiting and possibly overturning the protection rights set forth in Roe v. Wade, Vox reported.
And CNN noted the court could chip away at abortion rights if not eventually all but overturn the landmark Supreme Court opinions of Roe v. Wade.
The law was slated to go into effect on Friday, but The Center for Reproductive Rights, which represents patients, clinic and doctors, in the state, asked the court to block enforcement of the law.
Complicating things is the fact that Chief Justice John Roberts voted with the court’s four liberals for the stay. New Justice Brett Kavanaugh wrote a dissent.
“In order to resolve the factual uncertainties presented in the stay application about the three doctors’ ability to obtain admitting privileges, I would deny the stay,” Kavanaugh wrote.
About 10,000 women a year seek abortions in Louisiana. Challengers maintained if the law were to go into effect, only one doctor would be able to provide abortions in the state, Louisiana District Court.
