Mid-Life Wakeup Call: How One Woman Shed 40 Pounds of Fat at Age 50

By    |   Friday, 27 April 2012 03:16 PM EDT

She’d been thin all her life — so who was that chunky woman in the photograph?

As a chiropractic physician, she’d spent nearly two decades helping others achieve better health. But she’d forgotten to pay attention to her own health.

Now here she was, in her early 50’s, tipping the scale at 170 pounds.

Worse yet, not only was she overweight, but her doctor now warned her she also suffered from prediabetes.

Her blood sugar was high, she was moody and depressed, and she was plagued by constant aches and pains.

Seeing that photo of her own plump belly and round face became a tipping point — her own mid-life wakeup call. This was not the life she envisioned for herself, so she began to fight back against the battle of the middle age bulge.

Along the way, the simple strategies she used — and her 40 pounds of weight loss — were documented in a free video produced by Newsmax Health.

This video, which includes some astonishing “before” and “after” photos, exposes just how easy it is to pack on those pounds.

In fact, a full two-thirds of all American adults are overweight, and one-third are considered obese by medical standards.

By age 45, you could unwittingly gain 8 to 12 pounds per year.

That’s because muscle mass decreases with age. And because muscle mass burns more calories than fat, the middle-aged body doesn’t burn calories like it once did. Plus, metabolism slows down about 5% each decade.

Men go through hormonal changes during mid-life that contribute to that “beer belly” look — whether they drink beer or not. And women have an even harder time.

According to the Mayo Clinic, women frequently experience an increase in belly fat as they age, particularly when they are post-menopausal.

Unfortunately, belly fat is not only unattractive — it’s downright life-threatening.

Even a few extra inches of belly fat puts you at elevated risk of diabetes, and increases your risk for a heart attack.

So learning how to lose weight at mid-life — like this 50-year-old woman did — could actually save your life.

A new study reported in the Archives of Internal Medicine indicates that the larger your belly, regardless of your weight, the greater your risk of dying from cancer, lung disease, or heart disease.

That’s because this belly fat, discussed in the free video on fighting back against mid-life weight gain, promotes inflammation, which is linked to many chronic diseases.
