Liz Cheney Draws Almost $1M From Texans, Including Bush and Rove

Rep. Liz Cheney, the underdog in the race for a fourth term representing Wyoming in the House, has brought in nearly $1 million from Texas donors including former President George W. Bush and political strategist Karl Rove, for a total of more money than has come in from any other state except California, including her own.

Bush, Rove, and former U.S. Commerce Secretary Donald Evans, among others, have donated $2,900 each, the maximum amount allowed in a congressional primary, bringing Cheney's Texas totals to approximately $950,000, reports The Houston Chronicle.

Several oil and gas industry executives also joined Cheney's donor list, including Midland Energy President S. Javaid Anwar and Ray Hunt, the executive chairman of Dallas-based Hunt Consolidated.

Cheney's father, Vice President Dick Cheney, who served under Bush, is a former CEO of the energy giant Halliburton and at one time lived in Dallas.

Overall, the congresswoman has brought more than $15 million, according to Federal Election Commission records. Texas was Cheney's second-highest fundraising source, coming in behind California with $1.5 million. Meanwhile, she's brought in around $386,000 from donors in her own state.

Her challenger, attorney Harriet Hageman, has brought in about $4.3 million in donations for her campaign, including $150,000 from Texas donors and $940,000 from donors in Wyoming.

But even with her higher totals, Cheney, one of two Republicans on the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 incidents at the Capitol, is facing a strong challenge from Hageman, an attorney who has been backed by former President Donald Trump.

Trump sees Cheney as a nemesis not only because of her participation as the committee's vice chairwoman but because she voted to impeach him. While endorsing Hageman, Trump referred to Cheney as a "warmonger and disloyal Republican."

Cheney, meanwhile, has vowed that she will work to ensure that "the former president never again gets anywhere near the Oval Office," and last week released an ad in which her father called Trump a "coward" and said that "in our nation's 246-year history, there has never been an individual who is a greater threat to our republic" than the former president.
