Leaked emails show longstanding ties between President Donald Trump advocate Nigel Farage and WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, Business Insider reported.

Emails show a relationship that dates back at least 5 years, when the United Kingdom Independent Party (UKIP) under Farage's leadership reached out to Assange's camp to arrange a meeting, Business Insider reported.

At the time, Assange was battling an arrest warrant (EAW) for sexual assault allegations in Sweden.

"So far, UKIP London has been only British political party to openly support Mr. Assange's fight against EAW and his freedom of speech, and we would very much like to continue doing so," read an email from the UKIP camp to Assange's attorney.

And UKIP acted on Assange's behalf in parliament, the emails show.

It adds to the palace intrigue that started Thursday when White House press secretary Sean Spicer was asked if Farage met with Assange on Trump's behalf after Farage was seen leaving the Ecuadorian embassy in London.

"I don't keep [Farage's] schedule. I generally don't worry about what's going on across the pond," Spicer told reporters.

Farage first met Trump this past August in Mississippi through Steve Bannon, a friend of Farage's for years, according to a profile in The New Yorker.

Farage became the first foreign dignitary to meet with Trump after getting elected president.
