Sen. Graham on Venezuela: Trump Should 'Put Military Force on the Table'

By    |   Friday, 14 June 2019 03:55 PM EDT

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., on Friday urged President Donald Trump to “put military force on the table” in regards to the ongoing dispute over the presidency in Venezuela.

While on Fox News Friday morning, Graham, a close ally of the president’s, was asked about Trump’s foreign policy challenges with embattled Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro refusing to leave office, North Korea continuing to ignore their agreement, and Iran’s alleged attack on oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman.

“It’s a time of testing,” Graham said, adding that the president should “put military force on the table,” comparing it to President Ronald Reagan’s invasion of Grenada in 1983, and arguing that it could end Cuba’s support of Venezuela.

“We need points on the board,” the senator said. “Start with your own backyard. Tell Cuba if you are not out of Venezuela, in a week, and people are starving and dying in Venezuela because Maduro is such a thug, then we are making a mistake. Fix Venezuela and everybody else will know you are serious.”

Graham previously said that Trump should send a message to Venezuela saying, “if you choose Maduro and Cuba, we’re coming after you. This is in our backyard.”
