LIGNET: More Covert Aid Likely for Syria as Peace Plan Fails
With the Syrian Army shelling Homs today, the peace plan negotiated by special UN envoy Kofi Annan appears to have failed. Syria shows no sign of withdrawing from Homs and other towns today, as it had agreed to do, and is unlikely to comply with the full ceasefire by April 12. There are few options remaining for international intervention in Syria, given that Russia and China still support the regime of Bashar al Assad. But it’s possible that the failure of the peace plan could lead to intervention that doesn’t make headlines — intervention in the form of increased covert aid to the Syrian rebels from two U.S. allies in the Middle East.
