Beijing's decades-long history of discrimination against its moderate Muslim Uighur minority in the restive Xinjiang region appears to have entered a new phase, as recent gruesome attacks on the civilian population increasingly reflect the escalation of violence against the Han Chinese majority.

In their latest move Tuesday, assailants wielding 20-inch knives wounded six passengers outside Guangzhou Railway Station in Guangdong province.
