Libya Seeks Meeting of UN Security Council

Saturday, 19 March 2011 08:40 PM EDT

CAIRO, March 20 (Reuters) - Libya has called for an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council after it was bombarded by a coalition of Western states, Arabic satellite channels reported on Sunday.

The reports on Al Jazeera and Al Arabiya did not give a source or give details about the purpose of such a meeting.

The U.N. Security Council passed a resolution authorising a no-fly zone over Libya and the use of "all necessary measures" -- code for military action -- to protect civilians. Western forces launched air strikes on Libya on Saturday.

Libyan state TV reported that Moammar Gadhafi said the U.N. Security Council had a responsibility to halt the aggression against Libya but reported nothing on the prospect of a meeting.
