Lawyers for drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman claim their client is suffering from hallucinations, memory loss, and other impairments behind bars.

According to ABC News, Guzman's attorneys submitted a court filing in which they said the restrictions placed on him — called special administrative measures — are having a negative impact.

"Counsel has been visiting with Mr. Guzman since February and has noticed that during the last month Mr. Guzman has suffered a marked deterioration in his mental state," the filing reads.

"Counsel has noticed that Mr. Guzman has begun repeating himself often and sometimes forgetting what the discussion is about. It is plain to the defense team that something is not right with Mr. Guzman."

Other alleged problems listed are hallucinations, headaches, ringing in his ears, and a sore throat. Guzman also thinks the government is spying on him.

Guzman is being held at a federal jail in New York City as he awaits a trial that includes multiple federal indictments. His lawyers asked for the restrictive measures to be lifted.

Guzman has escaped from Mexican prisons twice. He was arrested for a third time in 2016.
