Russians Say UN Meeting on Koreas Needed Urgently

Saturday, 18 December 2010 07:10 PM EST

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — Russia's U.N. ambassador says Moscow called for an emergency Security Council meeting because of escalating tensions on the Korean peninsula.

Vitaly Churkin said the Russian government believes the Security Council must send "a restraining signal" to North Korea and help launch diplomatic actions to resolve all disputes between North Korea and South Korea.

Churkin expressed regret that the council meeting wasn't held immediately on Saturday. Mark Kornblau, spokesman for the U.S. Mission, said the meeting was scheduled for Sunday to meet requests of other council members for time to consult their capitals.

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The U.N. Security Council has scheduled an emergency meeting for Sunday on North Korea at Russia's request.

Mark Kornblau, spokesman for the U.S. Mission to the United Nations, said Saturday the council will hold closed-door consultations at 11 a.m. EST (1600 GMT). The United States holds the council's rotating presidency this month.

Russia has expressed concern about escalating tensions on the divided Korean Peninsula. South Korea has announced plans to hold military exercises on a border island shelled by North Korea last month.
