House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., will meet with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen in California state next month rather than in Taipei to avoid upsetting China, Financial Times reported.
McCarthy and Tsai will meet at the Ronald Reagan Library during Tsai's trip in April, when she will also travel to New York and parts of Central America. The Financial Times noted that the trip comes before the end of Tsai's term in January.
"We shared some intelligence about what the Chinese Communist party is recently up to and the kinds of threats they pose," a senior Taiwanese official, whose name was not given, told the Financial Times about information the country has provided to the speaker.
The official also said that China is "not in a good situation right now."
The news follows pressure by China for "the U.S. to earnestly abide by the one-China principle," according to a spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry who added that China is "opposed to any official interactions with Taiwan."
