House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy told Fox News on Friday that Democrats will lose the House if they nominate Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., for president, saying they’ve “surrendered to the socialists.”
There is a reason why Bernie Sanders is going to become their nominee and that’s because this is no longer the Democratic Party — this is a socialist Democratic Party," he told Fox, adding that several freshman congresswomen “don’t call themselves Democrats, they call themselves socialist Democrats.”
The congressman said, “This is where the party has gone. ... That’s why they’re going to lose the majority.”
Many conservatives, including President Donald Trump, have attempted to paint Sanders’ popularity as a sign that the Democratic Party has embraced socialism despite him being the only socialist running for the party’s presidential nomination.
“The Democrats are going to nominate who they think best represents them,” McCarthy said. “And I think, as today’s socialist Democratic Party, Bernie is their person who represents them best.”
