Arizona Republican gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake has gained a slight lead in the race after her Democrat challenger, Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs has continued to refuse to debate her, a new Daily Wire/Trafalgar Poll shows.
According to the poll, Lake is leading Hobbs by 2.8 points, falling just short of the poll's 2.9-point margin of error, with 4.5% of the voters saying they're still undecided, reports Newsweek.
"Most of the undecideds have a negative opinion about how Biden is handling his job as president, 55.9% in the Senate race and 56.9% in the governor's race," Trafalgar founder Robert Cahaly told The Daily Wire.
Hobbs had held the lead in polls since September, but Lake is now ahead by 1.6 points, according to a RealClearPolitics polling average.
Hobbs said she would not debate Lake because she did not want the debate to become contentious like those held during the primary elections when GOP candidates argued over each other. Her campaign, though, said that "you can't debate conspiracy theorists," referring to Lake's denial of the 2020 presidential election results.
Lake said she'd allow Hobbs to pick the moderator and all questions for the debate, but the Democrat refused, requesting a town hall setting where she and Lake would be questioned separately.
Lake slammed Hobbs on Twitter in September as a "coward," and said in a video that Hobbs "doesn't have one single policy to stand on. Not one."
Hobbs, in response, has accused Lake of trying to distract voters and said she has no intention of telling voters how she planned to govern. Hobbs posted a tweet saying that "debate about debates is over. I have real plans to lead Arizona forward."
If Hobbs pulls out a win, she'll be Arizona's first Democrat governor since Janet Napolitano's wins in 2002 and 2006.
