McCain: Expect 'Same Movie' in Afghanistan as in Iraq

By    |   Sunday, 10 August 2014 11:09 AM EDT

Sen. John McCain says he warned that pulling all troops out of Iraq would lead to the chaos now being seen there, and if the United States continues with the similar plans in Afghanistan, "you'll see that same movie again."

"There is no policy, and so, therefore, there is no strategy. So, therefore, things are going very, very badly," McCain said Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union."

The United States has begun airdrops to Christians and Yazidis surrounded by members of the terrorist group Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, as well as limited airstrikes to protect American advisers in Erbil and Baghdad.

But McCain says that is not enough. He criticized President Barack Obama for labeling the situation an Iraqi problem.

"This is an Iraqi problem," McCain said, "but it's a United States problem, and it is a threat to our national security." He noted that the director of National Security, Homeland Security and FBI have all warned that ISIS is a threat to the U.S. homeland.

McCain said he would be "rushing equipment to Erbil" in the Kurdistan region, where Americans are posted and ISIS is said to be moving in on. He also said he would provide training and equipment to the Kurds and launch airstrikes into Syria.

"They have erased the boundaries between Iraq and Syria," he said.
