A perception that the United States doesn't care much about the Middle East has the region "descending into chaos," former U.N. Ambassador John Bolton said on Monday on Fox News Channel's
"On the Record with Greta Van Susteren."
U.S. friends and foes alike think the only real issues the United States cares about are stopping Israeli settlement construction in the West Bank and cutting a deal on Iran's nuclear weapons, Bolton said.
That, he said, will enable them to "draw the conclusion that they can act without serious threat of a U.S. response."
Multiple mistakes have been made in the region, going back to the last two years of the George W. Bush administration, said Bolton, who served as U.N. ambassador in 2005-06.
Bolton was particularly critical of the Iranian nuclear deal. He said that although the White House won't admit it, people there think the world can live with a nuclear Iran.
"I think that's a prescription for chaos in the region," Bolton said.
