The liberal hosts of MSNBC's "Morning Joe" blamed Vice President Kamala Harris' loss to Donald Trump on the Democratic Party's fixation with identity politics, proclaiming Monday that "woke is broke."
Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough were so fixated by a column from The New York Times' Maureen Dowd on Saturday titled "Democrats and the Case of Mistaken Identity Politics," that they read it in its entirety on the air.
"We got a lot of calls about this piece, and it's an interesting message for Democrats," Brzezinski said, according to the Daily Mail. "'It really crystallized how some Democrats are waking up and realizing that woke is broke."
Dowd wrote that Trump didn't make his supporters feel like they were walking on eggshells.
"Donald Trump played to the irritation of many Americans disgusted at being regarded as insensitive for talking the way they'd always talked," she wrote.
Scarborough also discussed how Dowd showed that white progressives are demonstrably further to the left of "the minorities they champion," according to the Daily Mail.
Dowd wrote how Trump made significant gains with Black and Latino communities while also getting a majority of white women to vote for him.
Dowd referenced a Financial Times report in October that showed 75% of people who identify as white progressives believed that "racism is built into our society." But only 62% of Black Americans and 38% of Hispanics agreed. Plus, on immigration, one of the top concerns of voters going into the election, nearly half of Black and Hispanic Americans favored a more hardline approach to border security. But just 15% of white progressives agreed.
"This is what we've known since 2017, what you and I have talked about, that white elitists that run the Democratic Party are far to the left of many Black and Hispanic voters in the Democratic Party," Scarborough said, talking to the Rev. Al Sharpton. "I remember a pollster for Barack Obama … came out and had that poll in 2017. He got absolutely hammered on Twitter, absolutely hammered by the far left. How dare you say this! How dare you. But he was right.
"It was true in '17, and it was doubly true in 2024 that these white progressives on the far, far left said, We're going to save you, Black and Hispanic people of America.'
"A lot of Black and Hispanic people of America said, No thanks. You're kind of wild. You're too far left. We believe in the American dream. We want to be part of the American dream. Thanks, but no thanks. Keep that in your college classes."
