Former Vice President Joe Biden will launch a Political Action Committee on Thursday, a signal he could be gearing up for a presidential run in 2020, the New York Times reports.
Biden, 74, ran in 1998 and 2008, but dropped out of both races after failing to secure the Democratic nomination. He talked about running again in 2016 but cited the death of his son as a reason he never moved forward with a bid.
Biden intends to unveil the "American Possibilities" PAC on Thursday. He will use it, according to the Times, as a platform to build relationships with donors, travel on behalf of the Democratic Party and "contribute to candidates in the two governor’s races in November and in next year’s midterm elections."
"Biden has a lot of support out there, and this gives him a way to grow that support while also helping Democrats win and build the party," Stephanie Cutter, a veteran Democratic strategist, told the Times.
Biden has told some Democrats that he is concerned about the direction of the country under President Donald Trump and that Hillary Clinton’s loss last year happened, in part, because so many working-class white voters picked Trump.
"Thinking big is stamped into the DNA of the American soul," he writes about the PAC. "That’s why the negativity, the pettiness, the small-mindedness of our politics today drives me crazy."
