The Department of Homeland Security's new disinformation chief fueled allegations stemming from the since discredited Steele dossier and has promoted other baseless Trump-Russia collusion claims, the Washington Examiner reported.
Nina Jankowicz, selected to head DHS' Disinformation Governance Board, cited the Steele dossier author as a disinformation expert, cast doubt on the Hunter Biden laptop story, and questioned the idea of coronavirus having leaked from a Wuhan, China, lab, the Examiner reported Monday.
She also spread misleading claims about the funding of the Steele dossier, and undermined the U.S. intelligence community's assessment that Iran was attempting to hurt then-President Donald Trump's reelection chances in 2020.
Jankowicz repeatedly has shared claims about Trump-Russia collusion since 2016.
On Nov. 1, 2016, Jankowicz shared Clinton's infamous Halloween tweet — "It's time for Trump to answer serious questions about his ties to Russia." — and tweeted: "Husband texted me 'you have news to wake up to.' Never thought it would be this. Confirms our worst fears about Trump. I am horrified."
That post included a screenshot with the caption: "Donald Trump has a secret server (Yes, Donald Trump). It was set up to communicate privately with a Putin-tied Russian bank called Alfa Bank."
Soon after that tweet, Jankowicz posted again.
"Trump had not one, but two secret email servers to communicate with influential Russian bank. Unbelievable," she tweeted while sharing a Slate article by Franklin Foer, to whom Fusion GPS had been feeding Trump-Russia stories, according to emails from special counsel John Durham.
The Russian bank claims have been doubted or shot down by Durham's team, the FBI, CIA, special counsel Robert Mueller, and a bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee investigation.
Democrat lawyer Michael Sussmann has been indicted on charges of concealing his clients, including the Clinton campaign, from the FBI when he pushed the debunked Russian bank allegations.
Jankowicz repeatedly shared other collusion claims throughout 2016, including information sourced from British ex-spy Christopher Steele's discredited dossier. Steele was hired by Fusion, which had been hired by Clinton campaign general counsel Marc Elias.
"Trump's Kremlin ties don't end at [Paul] Manafort. This is serious people," Jankowicz tweeted in September 2016 in response to a statement by the Clinton campaign about a Yahoo News story.
In that Yahoo story, written by Michael Isikoff, Clinton spokesman Glen Caplin said, "It's chilling to learn that U.S. intelligence officials are conducting a probe into suspected meetings between Trump's foreign policy adviser Carter Page and members of Putin's inner circle."
Isikoff's story recounted claims in the Steele dossier, including about Trump's foreign policy adviser Carter Page, and cited Steele as a "Western intelligence source."
Jankowicz also referenced Clinton's claims about Trump that June and shared a link to a since-deleted Medium post she had written featuring a mural of Trump and Putin kissing, the Examiner reported.
