NBC's "Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert" live production was among Sunday night's top shows, according to early ratings and reviews.
The broadcast featured a critically acclaimed cast including multiple-award-winner John Legend as Jesus Christ, rock legend Alice Cooper in the role of Herod and acclaimed songwriter Sara Bareilles as Mary Magdalene, Broadway World reported.
The David Leveaux-directed production, which was filmed at the Marcy Armory in Brooklyn, New York, before a live audience, also included Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, who worked together as executive producers.
The live staging of the 1971 Broadway rock opera won audience approval, scoring a 6.0 rating, 10 share in Nielsen's metered market households, putting it on par with CBS' "60 Minutes" and ABC's "American Idol," Variety noted.
The rating means that, excluding the network's Golden Globes and sports, "Jesus Christ Superstar" is NBC's top time slot rating for 8 p.m. to 10:15 p.m. in the last three years, The Wrap said.
These numbers also highlight the fact that the live broadcast has officially overshadowed other recent live musicals such as Fox's airing of "A Christmas Story Live" in December, which drew a 2.8 overnight rating/5 share, and sets it on a level with NBC's last live production "Hairspray" in December 2016, which received a 6.0 rating/10 share in household results, according to The Wrap.
