Superstar rapper Jay Z and Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein have joined together to make a six-part series on Trayvon Martin, the Florida teen whose shooting death in 2012 sparked a racial uproar across the nation, Variety reports.
The project will be based on the books "Suspicion Nation: The Inside Story of the Trayvon Martin Injustice and Why We Continue to Repeat It," written by Lisa Bloom and published by Counterpoint, and "Rest in Power: The Enduring Life of Trayvon Martin," written by Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin, the late teen's parents, and published by Spiegel & Grau.
Martin, an African-American high school student, was killed by George Zimmerman, a 28-year-old mixed race Hispanic man and member of the neighborhood watch group. Zimmerman — who claimed he shot the unarmed Martin in self-defense after an altercation — was acquitted on a second-degree murder charge.
A Justice Department federal civil rights investigation concluded there was no evidence that Zimmerman killed the teenager based on his race.
