A torrent of racist tweets at a seemingly innocuous Old Navy advertisement for a sale which featured an interracial couple with a child has been countered by thousands of people supporting the clothing chain on social media.

The racist tweets to the promotion over the weekend included outbursts that it was disgusting, promoted forced integration and white genocide.

The Jezebel blog noted that the usual response to an Old Navy ad is only in the dozens, so this one obviously struck a nerve.

Among those responding to the bigoted comments was Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain's son, Jack.

The Navy helicopter pilot, who has a black wife, Air Force Officer Renee Swift McCain, was one of many supporters of the ad who posted pictures of his family with the #LoveWins hashtag, CNNreports.

Others wrote that they would now shop at Old Navy to support their inclusiveness and counter the racists.

This is not the first time that such an ad has generated controversy. A 2013 Cheerios with an interracial family generated such a racist response on YouTube that the website closed the comments section.

The criticism over such ads comes at a time when interracial marriages are at an all-time high in the United States. According to a Brookings Institute studied released a year and a half ago, 8.4 percent of all marriages in the US are multiracial, compared to only 0.4% in 1960.
