Jack Caravelli, a former high-level CIA analyst, said this week that an Israeli attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities would be a “very difficult undertaking” involving “several dozen” planes and would be, by far, the most complicated military action that Israel has ever undertaken.
Caravelli, now a senior analyst with LIGNET.com, pointed out that Israel’s successful 1981 attack on the Osirak reactor in Iraq involved 16 planes and just one target. The attack on Iran now being considered, he said, would be on an entirely different scale with a large number of potential targets, requiring several dozen planes, at a minimum, and additional planes to combat improved air defenses in the region, and more for aerial refueling.
Israeli military planners, he said, are likely favoring the same route planes took out of Israel in 1981, skirting the Jordanian border before flying over northern Saudi Arabia and crossing into Iran.
