IRS Spends $4 Million Annually on TV Station

By    |   Tuesday, 26 February 2013 05:15 PM EST

The IRS may be watching us but a number of Republicans are now asking who’s watching the IRS — more specifically the tax agency’s $4 million-a-year television studio.

“The IRS spends $4 million annually to run its own full-service television production studio,” asserts the House Republican Conference, which posted a photograph of the expansive studio on the flickr picture sharing website.

“Instead of raising taxes, let’s eliminate the IRS television studio,” charges the conference, which superimposed a large price tag over the photo with “$4 million every year” in red.

A spokesman for the IRS did not immediately respond to a Newsmax request for information on the television studio, and specifically who watches the content.

Republican Congressman Tom Cole of Oklahoma pointed to the IRS television studio as an example of wasteful government spending. He said that such expenditures are not being targeted under the automatic spending cuts of sequestration, which is scheduled to take effect on Friday.

“Although it makes necessary spending cuts, sequestration targets nothing at all,” pens Cole. “It’s the equivalent of a family deciding to save $1,000 this year by making equal cuts to not only their cable subscription but their heating and grocery bills.”

Rep. Bill Flores, a Republican from Texas, tweeted on Tuesday: “Would you rather see $4m in cuts to the IRS’s TV studio or $4m cut from the FBI & law enforcement?”

“Live from the IRS — paying $4 million a year on their own TV studio. Really?” adds Rep. David B. McKinley‏ of West Virginia.

The website deathandtaxes.com offered its own programming suggestions for the IRS, including “How I Met Your Mother and How we got Divorced and how I still have to claim her as a dependent even though she’s remarried and lives in a sweet house with the dude that owns the Cosi on 13th and Broadway.”
