Iran Lawyer Fails to Get Bail Deal for 2 Americans

Sunday, 18 September 2011 06:24 AM EDT

TEHRAN, Iran — The lawyer for two Americans jailed in Iran says he has failed to obtain the second, key signature on bail arrangements for a possible release of his clients, convicted of spying.

Masoud Shafiei says he couldn't complete the paperwork on Sunday on the $1 million bail deal for Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal because the second judge who was supposed to sign the documents is on vacation until Tuesday.

One judge signed the documents Saturday but two judges have to sign before the bail can be posted.

Shafiei tells the AP that he has "no choice but to wait."

Bauer and Fattal were sentenced last month each to eight years in prison. They deny the spying charges, but say they may have mistakenly crossed into Iran while hiking in northern Iraq.

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — The lawyer for two Americans jailed in Iran says he is waiting for a second, key signature on bail arrangements for a possible release of his clients, convicted of spying.

Masoud Shafiei says he is back in court on Sunday, trying to complete the paperwork on the $1 million bail deal for Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal.

The two were sentenced last month each to eight years in prison.

Shafiei says one judge signed the documents on Saturday but a second judge has to sign before the bail can be posted. No timeframe was set for the pair's release.

Iran's foreign minister said Saturday the courts are willing to cancel the Americans' sentences in the "near future."

Bauer and Fattal say they may have mistakenly crossed into Iran while hiking in northern Iraq.
