RNC Platform Takes Hard Line on Immigration

Thursday, 23 August 2012 08:32 PM EDT

Drafters of the Republican National Committee platform are taking a hard line on immigration, calling for an end to so-called sanctuary cities and in-state tuition for illegal immigrants at public universities.

Republicans meeting in Tampa, Fla., this week have adopted a series of amendments to the party's platform that also call for the federal government to complete a fence along the border with Mexico and require all U.S. businesses to use the government's E-Verify program to ensure that no illegal immigrants are hired.

Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, who is an informal adviser to Mitt Romney on immigration, proposed the amendments. They mirror the party's 2008 platform. The amendments received broad support from delegates on the party's platform committee.
