Rep. Bobby Rush, D-Ill., introduced a resolution last week that urges congressmen to use the term "undocumented foreign nationals" instead of "illegal immigrants” to describe foreigners working in the United States without proper documentation.
Rush’s move comes after the Associated Press decided to change its Stylebook last week to allow use of "illegal immigrant" in direct quotes only. The word "illegal" should strictly refer to an action, not a person, the news service says.
Conservatives lambasted the AP decision. “Illegal immigrant" is still the right term, Rep. Louie Gohmert, R-Texas, said on the House floor Friday,
The Hill reports. "When people immigrate into a country illegally, it's illegal immigration. And it is a problem."
It’s unlikely Rush’s resolution will get very far in a Republican-controlled House, and it would be non-binding in any case.
An immigration bill is expected to be released by the bipartisan Gang of Eight senators this week. A House bill is anticipated soon too.
Florida GOP Sen. Marco Rubio, one of the gang members, said Sunday on ABC that the plan currently being devised by the senators won't give illegal immigrants anything other than access to the legal immigration system and will make the border more secure than ever.
