Iranian Americans for Liberty is calling on Elon Musk to bring his Starlink satellite internet technology to Iran following a push by legislators and a move by the Treasury Department.
The Treasury this week issued Iran a General License (IAL) that Deputy Secretary of the Treasury Wally Adeyemo said would "expand the range of internet services available to Iranians. With these changes, we are helping the Iranian people be better equipped to counter the government's efforts to surveil and censor them."
House Reps. Claudia Tenney, R-N.Y., and Tom Malinowski, D-N.J., noted in a letter to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen on Thursday that Musk "recently stated that SpaceX would seek a license to provide its satellite-based Starlink Internet service to Iran. If such a license request is submitted, we urge you to approve it immediately."
The IAL praised the Treasury in a tweet saying, "U.S. Treasury Issues Iran General License to Increase Support for Internet Services. @elonmusk do your thing! #Starlink activate! Thank you @RepTenney for your fast action on this. The Iranian people will never forget you for this."
The organization added in a message to supporters: "This action from U.S. Treasury comes after Elon Musk publicly asked for exemptions so he can activate his Starlink system. Our dear friend, Representative Claudia Tenney, led a bi-partisan letter yesterday to U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen calling on Treasury to move quickly to issue these licenses."
